If you had to pick a better generation of gaming, which was a better gen, the current or last gen?

Cool thread Seth.
It's hard to choose really and depends on what you like. If you like fps, this is clearly the gen. But if you prefer rpg, you really have to go back to last gen, and even maybe the gen before that. The best rpgs are on the ds and that is no accident.

I would say this gen is better. I am playing so many more games then I ever have. Gamefly probably has something to do with that.

last gen easily... part of that is because the PS2 had it's day in the sun... SO many AAA titles it's not even funny

This gen is easily the best. I'm a big portable gamer and this year as shown that portable gaming can be as sophisticated as console gaming.

There was a time when i would of said last gen , but im not sure..i find myself quite addicted this gen to like everything lol. I think last gen on PS2 it had the rpg factor. But this current gen i think just all genres are better all around in different areas. So i think that is where my decision is in a large way.

I'm gonna go with this gen. Of course I'm of the mind that gaming is still maturing into an art and benefitting from increased technology. So as time passes, I feel like games gets closer to the medium they will ultimately be—hence why I prefer this gen over last. I'll probably find next gen even better unless things take an unexpected turn. That said, I still think Ico is the best example of gaming as art and that was last gen. Oh and this is my first post here EDIT: Looks like I'm going to have to modify my avatar dimensions; MC is looking a little fat

Probably this one. If we went back three generations it'd easily be the PSOne days.

Every Generation is better than the last, as far as I'm concerned it happens every generation.

Last gen was better IMO. I only play single player games, and my favorite genres are action/adventure, action/platform, adventure, RPG and survival horror. There were a lot more games in those genres last gen. There have definitely been a lot of great games this gen, but the popularity of shooters and multiplayer this gen have meant less single player focused games within the genres that I like.

PSP and DS have absolutely rocked. Overall though, I'd have to go with last. RPGs were just so much better last gen than this.

Wouldn't this gen win by default, thanks to backwards compatibility?
But if we were judging *just* on games from their respective eras... I dunno. This generation is weird. Xbox got a year head start, Playstation is in last place... it's like, flip-flopped from the previous gen. And the fact that the Wii even exists as-is, is kind of a huge "wtf?!?" And THAT'S the system that's sold better than the others.
Throw in the fact that there are TWO completely awesome handhelds that exist con-currently - just odd.
But yeah, as far as which gen I had the most fun with? This one. Last gen was great, but this gen is AWESOME.

Why is this gen better than last gen IYO? I'd say mostly because of the connected / online feel. I know that's the popular opinion, but it's one of the reasons why I don't like this gen as much as last gen. There's been too much of a focus on being connected online with an oversaturation of co-op and multiplayer games, as well as DLC that should have been included in games to begin with.

I don't mind that on games that are made with co-op or multiplayer in mind. Like most shooters and some adventure games, for example. But I do agree when I see people begging for multiplayer in a game like Mass Effect. Mass Effect 3 does NOT need to be multiplayer or co-op. I just don't see how it would work and not detract from the single player.

My favorite was actually 2 generations ago. Hell I still play all my ps1 games quite often. My interest in gaming is progressively declining with each generation. I don't play online very much with other people so I see little need for that.

I don't mind that on games that are made with co-op or multiplayer in mind. Like most shooters and some adventure games, for example. I don't mind, either. The only thing that bothers me is that there has been a bigger focus on games with co-op and multiplayer this gen than there have been on single player games. Every console gen before was primarily focused on single player games, which is why I was a console gamer instead of a PC gamer. But I do agree when I see people begging for multiplayer in a game like Mass Effect. Mass Effect 3 does NOT need to be multiplayer or co-op. I just don't see how it would work and not detract from the single player. Exactly. That's my biggest problem with the popularity of co-op and multiplayer gaming this gen. So many younger generation gamers these days want co-op or multiplayer in every game. They tacked-on pointless multiplayer modes to BioShock 2 and Dead Space 2 just to please the masses. They also added multiplayer to Uncharted 2, which I thought was pointless as well. And now it looks like multiplayer is a bigger focus of Uncharted 3 than the single player, which is ridiculous. At least Rocksteady didn't cave to the masses and make Batman: Arkham City a co-op or multiplayer game. Not every game needs co-op or multiplayer.
