So im looking at a few of them I need to finish and basically heres the deal, while im not as critical about jrpgs as many others i still have an area that is bugging me about some of them these days. And that is way to many missable routes that can only be known truely by using a guide, and how many of them have good and bad endings...im just not a fan of that setup.
Like for instance i wanted to try and get 1000/1000 for Tales of Vesperia but its just nonstop stuff that without a guide i most likely would not find unless after almost every small dialogue i ran to every area of the map and checked, its just not ideal to me. I dont mind a couple but man it seems alot of them just have so many things that virtually following a guide is the main way youre going to figure it out.
And generally what comes with that are good and bad endings if you miss this or that, and its a bummer to know if you sink 60-100 hours into a game just by playing it...just having fun and playing that you could basically ruin the ending for yourself without even knowing.
These things im just not a fan of and it bugs me. Like Cross Edge I think is a great game, i love the battle system and graphics...i still need to get "into" the game but in passing i heard theres a good and bad ending and im thinking damn i dont want to use a guide but i dont want to sit for hours on end and beat a game just to have some sucky ending.
I think jrpgs outside of this still are enjoyable for me, i love their combat systems and styles...and the worlds they present but these aspects i mention above, really bug me a bit.

There was one JRPG (I don't remember which) that had the best weapon in the game unobtainable if you HAD opened a specific chest early in the game. That's right. Open the chest early on and the ultimate weapon will not be available in the late game. And there was no way to know this without a guide. Now THAT is ridiculous.

FF XII is the game you are talking about. However, for that specific game it wasn't a big deal, it was called the zodiac spear and i never found it, nor did i give a damn, as the game was easily doable without it, had a blast with it too! I agree with the OP though, i also hate using guides and want to just play through a game, occasionally finding stuff on my own but with most JRPGs it's straight up not possible. Tales of Symphonia is another offender, i really liked the game, i did complete it but did NONE of the side stuff because of this

Open one of the chests in the sewers (which was available to you 30 minutes into the game) and you couldn't obtain the best polearm (and highest single target, non-combo damage) in the game from Nabudis Ruins. - And rusty beat me to it by a minute. Boy was I frustrated when I found that out.

I dont mind a ton of side stuff *IF* it doesnt affect the main story, thats where I have issues.
Like Dragon Quest games, they are long and they are fun...but the side stuff is just that, side stuff and it wont effect the main game. I love getting a good guide and reading through to find side things to work on when i feel like working on them.
But this missing good endings and bad endings over things that you really arent going to find on your own, has to go...i just dont enjoy games when i feel I have to sit and follow step by step a guide to get a good ending, that sucks to me.

Here's an idea. Stop caring about achievements then.
If I find the achievements/trophies aren't going to be worth the time it took to get them then I won't do them.
But sometimes I hate myself and get them anyway so I guess I have no room to talk *looks at FFXIII and Resonance of Fate*

Like you read about a game and in passing ill see people say "did i mess up getting the good ending?"...and its just a multitude of steps that following a guide seems to take you too, so that you get the good ending of a game. I mentioned the achievements there for tales but its moreso just about the games like Cross Edge that obviously theres a good and bad ending and i hate having to follow a guide for the good ending. Know what i mean?

What they need to do instead, is maybe not having "good" or "bad" endings, but have different variations of the same ending? Little things like if this person liked you more than you would have like an extra little thing at the end for that character.

Kinikko, perfect idea.
Id be for that, maybe like based on actions or choices the ending would vary a bit...but overall would be the same outcome most likely, but nothing to where people go "did you get the good ending?".
I know western rpgs touch upon this a bit but i think all games in general need to avoid having good and bad endings when it requires a guide for the "good" ending.

Yeah I am not fond of the good ending/bad ending thing. That's why I followed a guide for the entire playthrough of FFX-2, I wanted one of the good endings.
