Hacker group threatens PSN. It just seems kind of ironic that they are trying to take it to the man for the benefit of gamers, and it's the gamers who are getting the short end of the stick here.

This totally is. I feel really bad for those that only have the PS3. I don't understand the need these hackers have to do this crap.

I guess it is better that Sony gets hacked by people just trying to expose them than it is to get hacked by a group that just wants to target the users.

This totally is. I feel really bad for those that only have the PS3. I don't understand the need these hackers have to do this crap. I know! I finally got my own PS3 in November (instead of bumming my ex boyfriend's) and was starting to play pretty often and get my own library of games going. Now I'm just lucky to have my PC to game on while the PSN fails miserably. I wish people would stop messing with it...I'm normally all for hacking when it's just for exploitation of the company (and not the users or their information) but I'm sick of feeling like I made a bad decision buying a system that I can neither use (fully) or feel secure with. I like my PS3...I don't even have a problem with Sony as a company even though I've had my fair share of problems caused strictly by their policies. But I don't want to see it go under, especially not like this. I feel like this could happen to most companies if everyone simultaneously tried to compromise them. No fair

Are they really trying to do this for the benefit of gamers or are they trying to make an example of Sony to dissuade other large corporations from similar actions in the future? Not specifically, for gamers, but for the protection of the rights and freedoms of consumers across the board. Big corporations that can throw down millions on legal teams can squash the little guy whether they're in the right or not. The justice system is broken in that regard. It doesn't function well when there is an inequity in financial resources of the parties. So hackers standing up and saying, "No, you can't just bully the little guy, because we'll stand up for what we believe is right and cause you great suffering for acting like a bully who would squash our rights..." Well, I can understand that. Personally, it is an inconvenience to me and I wish the PS Store was up and everything would just run smoothly. If they completely crush Sony, or even just their Playstation arm, well that would suck for the gamers and much moreso for the people that would lose their jobs. But as a cause of showing that the little guys aren't powerless against those with the largest bank accounts, I get where they're coming from and so I don't fully begrudge them.

The only way to attack Sony is to do so in a way that causes consumers to choose the competitors product over Sony's. You can't have all of Sony's customers happy with their product and service and call it an effective attack. When all the consumers grow dissatisfied with their PS3's and abandon them for competing products - well that's when your attack is successful.
Is the attack directed at consumers? No, but they are affected as a by-product and are a necessary component to the attack being effective.
It's like saying that when postal workers go on strike, they are attacking the people who use the postal service. No - they are striking against their employer, but the consumers are affected as a by-product of that strike and the strike would not be effective if they weren't.

Ok but here's the thing. When hackers hack, they know they are doing something wrong. So if they get caught, who are they to complain about getting sued or prosecuted? I don't disagree that Sony didn't need to go after Geohot as hardcore as they did with all of their corporate lawyers, but you know, if he didn't want to get burned he shouldn't have been playing with fire.
That would be like seeing a game case open at Walmart and taking a game from the case even though you know it's supposed to be locked. Instead of helping yourself, the moral thing to do would be to let someone know it's open so that no one can steal anything. And if you take the game and get caught, you shouldn't whine about getting arrested, having already known that what you are doing is illegal and there would be consequences to getting caught.

But why do you think what geohot did was wrong?
If you buy a thing, do you own it? If you own something, are you not allowed to modify it? As long as he isn't doing anything illegal, like pirating software, which he didn't do, then he should be allowed to do whatever he wants with his property. When he jailbroke the iPhone for instance the courts determined that he was within his rights to do so.
