So I recently resolved to do something about my backlog. I decided I would only buy one new game for every three that I crossed off the backlog. Better than trying and failing to quit cold-turkey again, right? Make it something realistic... That was three weeks ago. Last week I saw a new copy of Castlevania: Lord of Shadows on sale, 50% off for one week only and decided I couldn't pass it up. Today, I saw a copy of 3D Dot Game Heroes for $10 and couldn't pass it up. Last week a buddy of mine gave me 2 360 games he had duplicates of due to getting collections on PS3. So that's 4 new games added to the backlog. What have I crossed off in that time? Well, I finished 2 chapters in Halo Reach... Add this to the fact that my birthday and Father's Day both hit in June and I'm hooped. Plus I've got a laundry list of games I've been waiting on the PS Store for. Why can't I stop? I don't think I'm addicted to games, I think I'm addicted to acquiring games. It's like a metagame or something.

LOL, there's nothing wrong with you. You just need to think up a better strategy for tackling your backlog because your current one doesn't account for game sales. Sometimes a deal is just too good to pass up like you said, so your plan is doomed to fail.

Why can't I stop? I don't think I'm addicted to games, I think I'm addicted to acquiring games. It's like a metagame or something. It's funny that you should have that problem! I tried that method myself once, resolving not to buy any new games until I had at least finished three first. I totally agree with you, though. I don't remember what caused me to fail from that plan, but every plan I've tried since then has also failed (usually because of sales, now that you mention it Maximus). My current attempt involves just not buying new games right after they come out (with the exception of 3DS games because it's a new system) unless I'm going to actually play them right away. This provision allows me to buy used games, however. ;D So I'm still spending money. Just not as much!

I know how you feel.
I love collecting and if it's a good deal, I find it hard to pass up. I don't buy games I care nothing about though or games I know are crap.

Seems like you have a real sick issue my friend..... I am kidding but you may want to just cool it and get gaming before adding anymore titles to your list.

Perhaps, I should make a resolution to that effect... wait, so the suggestion is to play your games before buying other games right?(unless i missed something) well DAMN, that right there might just be the holy fucking grail of backlog elimination... You, sir, just won the backlog war in one fell sweep.... just kidding man but seriously, that IS the only way even if it's freaking obvious!! we need to stop BUYING GAMES no matter WHAT sales or not i have enough games to last me the next 10 to 15 years at my current pace and i swear i am NOT exaggerating either

Actually, it isn't the ONLY way. The other way would be to sell all the games that are in your backlog since you may never get to them anyway, but I can't seem to bring myself to do that either.

I actually did that to some extent. I got about $100 in store credit that way at GameStop. I have a couple more games I'm considering doing that with, mostly from my Wii library.

I know how that feels. I'm always writing in a portuguese forum "this is the last game i'm buying until (insert date here)". Then i receive e-mails from Zavvi.co.uk, Play.com, and some other online retailers, with their promos, and i always buy at least 1 game for 15 or 20 euros.
I'M WEAK :x
And i become a sad panda everytime i look to my shelf or my backloggery.
