I've had street fighter 4 since release day as I put 5 years into SFII, I consider myself a huge fan, but with the xbox D-pad being useless I haven't put hardly any time into this SFIV and with a big backlog of games i've never really got around to playing it on a serious level. Well now I want too so I've been looking at the madcatz stuff.
The pad looks good and I like the megadrive look to it with the 6 buttons etc is it any good or does it have to be the fightstick? Or how about the Hori range?
Anyone know or have any experience with them?

The fightpad is nice. Much better than a regular pad but I personally use an arcade stick myself. My personal reason for using it over the pad is because I have access to all 6 buttons much more easily. With a pad my thumb is my source of button pressing. With a stick, I can hit all 3 buttons at once. It feels more natural. I also feel my wrist is quicker than making motions with my thumb for those QCF moves (ie. fireballs.)
With that said, be forewarned, it does take practice to get used to the stick. It's not an instant thing. You have to really practice to become proficient. With a pad you can map the 3punch or 3kick macro to a bumper which allows you to not have to hit all 3 with your thumb.
Overall, I would say you can't go wrong with a pad but a stick will be more natural. A pad does feel a bit better if you use 360 characters like Zangief though. Much quicker to do a 360 motion on a pad than with a stick, especially if you have a square gate. So it also depends on who you use.

Was usually a ryu and ken type of guy but I also got good with the likes of feng, Honda, blanka and chun li etc. I never really bothered with zangief a whole lot, completed the game with him a few times but would rarely pick him for a vs match.
Thanks for the info man

No problem. You should be fine then. Charge characters tend to work best with a stick as far as I've noticed. Especially in SFIV.

It really depends on what characters you plan to use. Stick characters will require a stick, normal characters (Ryu, Ken, Crimson, Rufus, Juri, etc) only need a fight pad. The fight pad works very nicely for those characters because of the rounded D-pad, so you can roll your down-to-forward/backs much more smoothly.
Unless you're a tourny type player and swear by the Sanwa... I really can't stand those things. Can barely play on a stick unless it's a Happs.
Also, when CreepinDeth talked about being able to hit all 3 buttons at once; the fighting pad that I have makes it so that the shoulders work for all 3 punches/kicks. So that makes it quite convenient.

The fight pad works very nicely for those characters because of the rounded D-pad, so you can roll your down-to-forward/backs much more smoothly. I would disagree a bit and say that Shoto characters benefit just as well with a stick, especially with a square gate. I mostly use Ryu and Dudley and not only are the QCF moves easy to pull of but my combos are much more efficient because of my access to all the buttons with different fingers. Have you tried Seimitsu? That's what I use and is nice medium between Sanwa and Happ. But, there are plenty of tourney players that use Happ/IL. So if that's what you like, you should keep at it. Overall, the moral of the story is - Practice, practice, practice. An arcade stick was a bit annoying at first but once I learned how to pull off the moves I needed, I could no longer go back to a pad. But everyone is different, so I suggest putting some hours before completely putting the stick away. Nothing wrong with a pad at all though.
