Am i missing out on something life altering? I really noticed alot of praise with this one and just never tried it.
Is the game simply that good?

It's an addiction. Don't try it.

It's a grown up version of legos, except replace your older brother destroying your creations with cactus people. Replace your mother stopping you from playing with zombies/skeletons.
Minecraft in a nutshell.

The first couple hours of discovering what minecraft is all about was the fun part for me. I would recommend picking it up, its going to keep growing as it isn't a finished game yet and there are tons of mods out there for it.
watch out for those creepers

I will say this: as a self respecting gamer you owe it to yourself to try out the game to see what the concept is all about... However, do NOT get addicted to it or else say goodbye to your backlog

I've been thinking about trying it for a while. I have some friends that play and showed me what you can do with it...it really is grown up legos. I don't have a lot of time to devote to it and I'm really OCD about certain things so I have this feeling that I would waste tons of time getting nowhere (see xkcd.com/861/ ) My friends joke that this is what I'd do...even without the painkillers =P

It's awesome, although I've not played it much recently. Would definitely recommend people have a go!
CSquared42: if you're a bit OCD-y then it could take over your life. Like if there's a hill that makes the view from your house not perfect, you can just mine it away. I spent about three days getting rid of an entire hill because I didn't like the look of it. Ugly hills are not cool.

The one thing Minecraft did for me is made me realize how much of a Dwarf I am. I spent a day mining down, and hollowing the inside of a mountain and turning it into a fortress, with tunnels going to different parts of the map and a large tower at the top of my mountain as an overlook.

I have a week to kill on vacation in June so I might give it a try then. My guess is that I'll get super addicted to it until I start thinking of it as a chore, then something will distract me and I won't touch it again for a few months, maybe years. This happens with pretty much every game I go overboard on You don't like anything you can't win

Pretty much. People have made some cool things. a team of people made Helm's Deep from LotR. One guy made a floating model of the millenium(sp?) falcon.

I see a LOT of students in my college play this game during class and it's amazing at some of the level designs they have made, but at the same time, they're not listening to the instructors teach. But on your free time, this game is pretty nasty. You can SPEND HOURS on just making a house...hell, just pan over to you tube and see some of the levels people have done. It will blow your mind. With mods coming in, the experience is going to grow into a massive community.

Once you make a level or design, can you do anything with it?

I thought it was neat for about half an hour. then I grew bored. It's just not my type of game.
My husband was playing it like crazy with his buddies for a while, but he eventually got burnt out on it. Now he pretty much only plays it when there's some new update.
