I know this a politically charged topic. I always thought I leaned republican but I am starting to push towards liberalism I think.
My thought process was that it's all about jobs. Tax the hell out of people and they won't create them. Welfare can be a money pit and growing up in southern california, I can tell you that there are a lot of leeches, illegals, etc leeching off the system there. Whenever I went to the hospital for random things like a broken bone, the ER was always chalk full of illegals that I know didn't pay for their health care. Ah well I'm digressing a bit here!
Just read the jobs report and it's pretty disappointing with the unemployment rate rising to 9.2% with minimal job growth. Where are the jobs? The GOP are squawking about the deficit while they get to enjoy their tax breaks for a little while longer. And they threaten the economy will stagnant with no job growth if their taxes are raised a few percent.
So here we are 6 months (+8 yrs) of lowered taxes and nothing to show for it except a ballooning deficit. No jobs and the ones created are at McDonalds.
Taxes were pretty high when Clinton was around but he did benefit from the internet boom to possibly offset it. Taxes were also ridiculously high around WWII to fund the war. What kind of negligence is it to go into "wars" in the middle east while also keeping taxes low?
This is class warfare. They have somehow put all of the blame on unions and middle-class workers. Look at this chart:
Corporate profits are very healthy and basically are careening past the pre-recession levels while middle-class workers are being squeezed here. In fact the only thing I've really seen republicans push for are CUTTING jobs at every level of government. I agree that there is a lot of waste and redundancy but that stuff is a drop in the bucket in terms of the costs of the wars and tax breaks the wealthier of us have enjoyed.
No one likes the idea of more taxes, but attacking middle-class is not the way to go about it. They need to be fair about where to reduce spending and when you propose 20% cuts to science & technology... sigh.
Just ranting~
