I keep my expectations sort of low so that i can enjoy a multitude of games and styles. Granted, it makes me have too many games to play but im too curious, know what i mean? Meaning im just too curious about how games are to pass them up over certain reviews maybe. Dont get me wrong i love and want all my games to play and feel polished, but i dont demand it all the time.
I think I look for a handful of things and if a game has at least a couple of those things ill be happy. Take rpgs for instance, if i fire it up and i hear great music, see good looking environments, have quests to do, see armor/weapon slots that show theres items to be found etc....its like as long as a few things are there that i look for i sort of can look past outstanding flaws in a game.
I tend to just like to play the field with gaming, i like being a guy that says "hey did you ever play this game or that game"....and maybe make someone a fan of a not so known or popular game.

It varies quite a bit. Some games I just like because they're fun to play (and replay), like most arcade-style games. Other games I like for the story, or for the immersive qualities they have to offer. I can generally be accepting of a game's flaws if they have something really going in their favor (such as with Deadly Premonition, whose faults I can overlook because of its incredible story, cast of characters, soundtrack, and variety of interesting sidequests to undertake). If a game has controls that annoy me though, that can really impact my thoughts on the game. I don't think games like Resident Evil have bad controls though; I think Resident Evil's controls are great. When I think of a game with bad controls though, I think of something like the NES Castlevania game. That game's controls really annoy me, which hampers my enjoyment of the game.

It depends.
For any new games I keep an open mind, even if I've read some reviews or blurbs on it.
For remakes and sequels/prequels my expectations are usually based on the original game.

I really try to keep an open mind toward games.
I feel like this has let me find some great games that I might have passed on because of the game not being the highest caliber. As mentioned earlier by Xpert, Deadly Premonition is one of those games that if just look at or play for 5 minutes you might hate, but the story is so good that you can overlook the other faults of the game. The game has a charm to it, that you don't find in some of the AAA titles.

I just look for stuff that appeals to me and seems interesting.
Good story and game play are essential.

It seems that we are all hardcore-casual gamers here! Why do I say this? Because we play whatever looks good to us which could be niche or mainstream. It bugs me how some people are so elitist towards others and feel like the developers "owe" the gamer something with every game they develop. If a game has a sprite fish that has to swim around in a bowl all day avoiding dangers like other fish poop or getting caught in a piece of fake seaweed, but has charm, cool music, and an overall good feel to it, I would play it! Haha! OK, maybe an extreme example. I love video gaming. I love playing all types of genre of game. I don't limit myself because a reviewer or all of them say a game is horrible. Because just like anything else, you won't know until you at least give it a rent. If someone told you your entire life that vanilla ice cream sucks so you never tried it, then one day, you took that leap and found out it was the greatest flavor ever, think of what you might have missed out on over the years. I love metaphorical speaking. Does that make me have a lower standard? I don't think so. If I am entertained for hours then it isn't any different than someone who watches mind-numbing television programs or E list movies that have foreign subtitles. I guess I kind of used this thread to vent my frustrations towards how picky and annoying some people are and how judgmental they may be towards those of us who do have a wider gaming selection. Me, I will say I have a "Wide Open Standard" towards the games I play! There, I will now get off my soap box. Thank you and goodnight!

I actually try not to keep any set standards. Just that it is playable. I enjoy a lot of games most people thought sucked. As long as there is some kind of redeeming factor or really interesting aspect or concept I'll keep playing the game. I've got a few closed-minded friends who only play shooters or only play games with modern visuals and I always pity them because they miss out on so many cool games that I KNOW they would enjoy if only they would give it a chance.

I tend to ignore review scores but I do read reviews as sometimes it gives good information on the game. But for me it is more does the game appeal to me and do I think I will have fun playing it? I also keep an open mind and I won't disregard a game. Some of the games I have had the most fun with are games that were rated mediocre. I think unless you are really picky you can find some good in almost every game.

That's pretty much my thing as well. I've enjoyed too many games that got mediocre reviews to let reviews influence me anymore.

I tend to lean more towards games that don't hurt my eyes to look at - no bright colors or nothing that makes me squint to see what's going on - and has fun game play. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one to only look for the games that are complete eye candy, I just don't enjoy putting a strain on my eyes or thinking I'm going to have a seizure. If there are too many controls to where I'll have to go through a tutorial whenever I put the game away for a couple days/weeks I'm more likely to not like it.
So, I guess I have low standards. Just give me something that doesn't hurt my eyes and is fun to play and I'll be happy.
But I try to keep my expectations low so I can either be amazed by a game or at least not completely hate it. I try to give all games a chance. One of the better examples is Dishwasher: The Vampire Smile which is one that just by looking at it I thought I'd hate it, yet, I ended up purchasing it and can't seem to put the controller down.

I try all sorts of different games, and don't hold any standard, so long as a game looks good enough to me, though a 3 out of 10 definitley makes me step back, but ussually I don't have the inclination to try a game that gets 3s.

I try to be as open-minded as I can. What may appeal to some may not to me, and vice versa. I suppose my standard is... I don't have standards, lol! If a game is fun, that's all that matters.

It's just gotta be fun to play, like mercenaries 2, wasn't polished or set the world a light (ok world in flames is the subtitle but you know what I mean) but I just really enjoyed playing through.
As long as the camera isn't annoying or awkward and the controls aren't too fiddly then I love it generally
