Are you working the job you thought you would?

As a kid? I know we could all say things like "When I was a kid I wanted to be a pro baseball player" or "when I was a kid I wanted to be an astronaut" but are you currently doing something you thought you would end up doing or something you never expected?

I am an IT professional but I never thought I would be a "computer nerd". (did i do that right buck?) I had aspirations of being an animator, specifically for Disney. But then I learned that it's not so easy to do that. Firstly, you have to train to draw "the Disney way" and secondly when they are looking to hire, they usually have something like one position and 10,000 entrants. Yeah, my dreams were squashed. So I found I can fix up a computer pretty effectively and went to school for that. So here I am 12 years later, working on computers but I find myself drawing new cartoon characters quite often. Maybe someday I will be famous for a new comic or something...

Anyways, back to the question, what did you dream of being and are you pursuing that dream today?

I'm not doing what I thought I would be when I started this job. I told my boss I was quitting to go back to school this summer and he gave a management position. I was perfectly content on coasting through, now I make more money and do less.

Not even close. I wanted to be a Marine Biologist ever since I was a kid. I work in the IT field.

Pretty much yes, I figured I would eventually go into Journalism/Publishing. Although I'm way ahead of the timeline I had imagined.

Pretty much. I always knew I wanted to go into health care.

Now I didn't think I'd be working in orthopedics when I was in nursing school, but here I am..

Hrmm... I'm not exactly sure what I wanted to be when i was a kid but I think rocket engineer was one of them.

I wouldn't have minded being a pro baseball player either hah. Stopped playing in high school.

Now I'm a lead engineer on particle accelerator systems for rare isotope studies. I'm accelerating particles rather than rockets =P

Nope. I had no idea what was going to happen. I just kind of fell into my career of sysadmin and web development. I did know I wanted to pursue something in "computers". Guess my karma was pretty good. I got more than I ever expected.

I work in tech support. Never got my degree for my chosen field.
