I wasn't entirely sure where I should post this, but here it goes.
So, I was interested to know and I haven't seen a thread around, what do you guys think about video games based on movies? Or the vice versa, movies based on video games? Are there any movies you wish had video games to them? Or perhaps you want a movie based on a video game?
I personally haven't seen a good movie that has been based off of a video game. Mortal Kombat would probably be my favorite in this category. On the other hand, I think that games made for movies generally suck - with the exception of Xmen Origins: Wolverine.
I had originally wanted a Halo movie but I'm not too sure if I'd be happy with Peter Jackson making it. (Not that I have anything against him because I've enjoyed most of his movies) But, I think that if they were to make a Halo movie it should be directed by the guy who made 300 and Watchmen. However, I would really love to see a Brutal Legend movie made by that same director (I'm horrible with names). It could be super epic, especially with the right cast.
So, what do you guys think?

I think a CGI Halo using the same voice actors as the game would possibly be ok. I just don't think a live action Halo would work.
Most games based on movies are junk. Off the top of my head I don't think I own any.
Movies based on games are also mostly bad. Tomb Raider was ok. The Dead or Alive movie I love because it's so bad. Of course if you're not a DoA fan to see what's so funny about the movie, it's probably just a bad movie. ;D
Final Fantasy Advent Children is probably the best.

I totally forgot about Advent Children and I have yet to completely watch Tomb Raider. But, yeah, I didn't really find the DoA movie funny as for some reason I wanted it to be awesome. I'm not quite sure what I was thinking back then but I used to love that series and I should probably watch the movie again. As for the Halo movie, I agree with you on it being CGI. I remember that out of the Halo Legends episode things the CGI one was my favorite - even though it was far from what I would expect from a Halo movie. I still think that if the do make a Halo live-action film it should look like this --> www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKGhoJ1mgQYSure, it's cheap and cheesy looking but if they were to make the guns look less plastic like it could be acceptable in my opinion.

I agree. There are not many that cross the streams well.
Tomb Raiderw as a decent movie from what I remember. Wolverine was a good game but I had stop becuase I kept going back to the jungle. It drove me mad.
The Lord of the Rings games were pretty damn sweet. I wish that they would remake them this generation.

Tomb Raider 1 and 2 are ok, but they are definitely watchable because Jolie looks really good.
And they keep making Resident Evil movies. I think I've seen them all, but most were forgettable. The first two are probably the best, but they're all a bit cheesy.

Resident Evil, to me, was entertaining. Tomb Raider as a movie. Advent Children.
Lord of the Rings games were OK, not great.
It's hard genre to tackle. For instance: Games are already becoming more and more like movies or long stories. What can you possibly bring to the table instead of a new movie/game?

Films based on video games will continue to be average to horrible until top filmmakers start making them. Just like comic book films. I mean imagine if Sam Raimi made Resident Evil or Infamous, Chris Nolan made Metal Gear Solid, or Peter Jackson made God of War or Final Fantasy for example.
As for games based on films. A few of the Star Wars games have been good. I also liked The Thing video game.

The Toy Story game that came out last year was pretty damn good if I must say so myself. I also really liked the Wolverine game. Resident Evil was very entertaining. The main problem with video game movies is Uwe Boll.

The First Transformers Game was cool, and the Hulk one was funner. I liked Advent Children and The Hitman movie, a little bit. Agent 46 Talked too much.

As for games based on films. A few of the Star Wars games have been good. I'm not too sure about that. I mean, some of them were fun but the Star Wars games that I really found to be entertaining were the ones that weren't made for the movies, Republic Commando, Obi-Wan, The Force Unleashed, Bounty Hunter, and Jedi Knight were some of the best in my opinion. And I think, out of all of those, Obi-Wan was one of the closest to being a game for the movie since it led into Episode I. And I figure that some party games based on movies are fun, like the Arthur and the Invisibles game.
