I have been looking for a diet to start and have been thinking about this or the Slim-fast diet. I have a lot of weight to lose and I know that the South Beach is one of those diets that makes you change your eating habits for life and that's kinda what I'm looking for.
Any tips or suggestions would be great!

Diet change without lifestyle change, will never yield results... But just like I was in most games the min/maxer, I went the mathematical route to solve my weight issue, found out my resting metabolic rate, my VO2 number, body fat, etc...Hire the right personal trainer, and went from 400-250 in about 9 months, that'll be 3yrs in August, and I float between 240-280ish depending on workout phase, diet phase, and if I'm injured? But I'm also back into my athletic type of life, and not my bum poker lifestyle i lived from 2003-2008...So change the life and the diet will come, but keep at like 40-40-20 diet, 50-40-10, or a 35-35-30, so many different things you could use to get your weight down, but the basics will always work, just be ready to be sore.

It is tough to choose a diet fad to follow because any number of them work for different people. I find when I am trying to lose weight I usually eat a diet that is about 50% protein, 30% carbs, 20% healthy fats. I eat 5 times a day. I also get one workout in per day, 5-6 days per week. That usually lasts an hour, give or take.
Eating healthy is a good first step but you do have to get out and exercise whether you follow a DVD in your living room, hit a gym, ride a bike, take a nice long walk, etc.

The south beach diet is not rated as high as it once was. I would reccomend weight watchers. My wife and I went on that a few years back and it works and it teaches you how to keep weight off. It's also the only clinically reccomended diet.

Journeyman, one of the pieces of advice i could give is don't try to do it all at once. Don't shock your system so much. Start by eating what you eating, but just less of eat and/or skipping snacks. It is not a race and the easier you are able to adjust to the changes you make in your life the more apt you are to keep them. EDIT: "apt"...sorry

Weight Watchers does do a good job because you're still allowed to eat some of those things you enjoy, without over indulging. After I got out of college I needed to lose quite a bit of weight. I had never really switched off from the athlete's diet, and over the course of my last semester I packed it on. Well, this actually continued for over a year before I got down to it. These are the three things in order of importance for me: 1. Portions 2. Exercise 3. What I ate I never ate unhealthy, I just always ate so much. Only eating when I'm hungry was a big deal too. Increase your water intake, many times your body will confuse thirst with hunger. Good luck.
