Dynasty Warriors 7 is a Hack and Slash RPGish game that actual started out as a fighting game! Being a love-hate game of mine I thought it would be cool to do my first review on it. This is of course.. the 7th installment of the series, but it really isn’t; actually it’s the 19th installment of the series(if not counting XL and Empires). Being based off the real Koei game, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, based off the book of the same name, Dynasty warriors brings a good blend of tactical and Button Mashing fun, but can it live up to being really the 19th game?
-Story- 10/10
Dynasty Warriors of course being based off a book, follows the book! Taking you deeper into each of the Three Kingdoms and even ending it with Jin, the Unifier of China. Each of the Four (Shu, Wei, Wu, Jin) Story mode will take you about 4+ hours if you know what your doing and it really helps with the neat addition where the cutscenes go straight to gameplay. This makes the game run more smoothly and loading screens don’t feel like a bore. Speaking of loading screens it brings me to the best part of the game, the loading screens. Most loading screens in Story mode are Narrative, and not just an orange bar going from one side to another; The Narrator should get an actor for the way he makes you feel; Stunning performance for that. Yet even with the Amazing Narration, there is one downfall, the endings. The only good one is Jin, because it ends the whole Three Kingdoms era. Wei story, well it becomes Jin, Shu was a Benevolence crapper, and Wu, oh god Wu. Sun Quan grabs his hoe wife and says “let’s have some fun now” and all the Wu Soldiers stand up cheering (because they’re all male)
-Visuals- 7/10
The Visuals for this game is good, but not that good. Of course the in-game graphics are lawful unless with a 3D HDTV (yes it has 3D capabilities, Xbox and PS3). Cutscenes are used with in game graphics in order to do the “Cutscenes to Battle” thing. Yet there is sometimes those cutscenes to which you know they worked on, with the perfect lighting and Masterful Fantasy 3D Graphics. Generic Officers and even the Soliders you slaughter in one slice don’t look the same, and of course Your Warriors Officers with they’re teenage scarves n stuff, don’t all look generic, but another complaint is that even though they may be from Shu, which colors are Green, they don’t always have to wear green or white. I would like for actually some other colors like Teals and such to rainbow the troops out.
-Sound- 10/10
Now with this I’m not going to smother you with words about the Sound, because it was done right. From the Battle Music to the voice acting, everything is flawless. It stuns me that Koei even said “Hey let’s make the officers say stuff when your attacking them”, which was very smart. If you turn down the SFX and Music, attacking such officers like “Zhou Yu” you can hear them saying such things as “Gah my arm” or “take this.” Koei knows us too because with the numerous DLC packs with the game, it comes with Music. That nice Hard Rock Lu Bu theme from Dw7 will never get old.
-Gameplay- 6/10
It could’ve been better. If you’ve played Dynasty Warriors, any Dynasty Warriors game, then you know, it’s the same every single game. You Spam XXY on a crowd of enemies and watch the blast of attacks kill 500 soldiers in 5 seconds, literally. There has been times playing this where I run through slice enemies on a horse and I get 200 kills somehow. A Neat addition for this game is them bringing back the Charge System and adding in the Strikeforce Multi weapon System. Now you can go into battle with Zhao Yun and attack with a Hammer and Bow, instead of a Spear. Yet of course the Move sets are shared, nor matter the weapon and person. This was a huge problem in 6; Koei knew this and took it to hand to actually add in another feature the EX Feature. This feature allows characters to further destroy armies with a unique move to them and only them with their Ex weapon, or weapon of choice. With the EX feature comes more aerial combos and even Aerial mousou, or ultimate finisher of supreme holy crapness, and each character has 2 mousou attacks. The Game has three modes, Story Mode, Conquest Mode, and a Tutorial. Story mode is fun addicting and great, and Conquest Mode, the downfall of this game. As most of you know DW has a Free Mode, to which you can choose a battle with any character and battle it out. No that’s not here; they leave you with a pathetic excuse for a RPG, Conquest Mode. All the stages are linear and tedious. Yet that’s not the horrible part, the bad part is that damn growth system, you gain exactly either 1-4 attack or defense with each officer kill, and you start your stats at the 200 mark, having to reach 1000 to max! This is probably the second most annoying part of this game. By the end of it I literally wrote on a sticky and put it inside the case for the next person if I trade it in “if I have to rescues another damn general again I’m going to snap”.
-Overall- 8.25/10
Reaching damn near 1000 words, this is where I hit the closing mark. The Game is great, but sometimes annoying. Sounds and Story Is great but Conquest Mode may ruin it for some people (me). Koei forces you to play to get your favorite characters, as because Conquest Mode is how you unlock characters. For me it’s a buy, being a long-term fan. If you’re new to the series I’d recommend a rental before you buy. Let me tell it straight, this game isn’t for everyone, if you’re a diehard of just a fan at that, Sure it’s a buy, but mostly I just say it’s a title that’s okay to miss.
