The Witcher is a spectacular single player RPG developed by CD Projekt RED. Published by Atari.
Gameplay: 9/10
The combat is very fun, albeit glitchy at times. General movement feels fluent enough to not hinder immersion. There is many pockets of mini-games, and other fun things to accomplish through out the journey. Back on combat for a second though, what makes this game fun is the mixing of swordplay, and magic while being aware of your surroundings to effectively dodge enemy blows. It can be challenging for new players, but overall as the game developes, it gets more intense, and more difficult. For a company with no huge backing, they did a great job with this. There is numerous puzzles as well, so the game not only challenges your reflexes, but challenges your wit.
World: 7/10
The world is wondrous, and beautiful at times, but my biggest problem was some places being very small and "boxed in". Some of the cities, if you didn't read a guide or anything, can be difficult to navigate the first few times. The game however does make you feel as though you are apart of something, as NPC's generally react to your presence, and you can interact with various NPC's that otherwise wouldn't be pertinent in todays theme park style RPG's.
Character Development: 6/10
What can I say? The main character doesn't necessarily change in attitude through out the whole story, and most of the other characters you come across are usually one sided. The main character is interesting, however, and can be fun to play as, but you never get to see much into his character. It makes it difficult to feel as though he does when you aren't really sure how the character would feel other than cliche brute macho guy that destroys mans.
Overall Storyline: 10/10
This is where Projekt RED picked up the game. The storyline was interesting, and eventful from start to finish. It was one of the greatest hooks to the games, other than combat. It had enough twists, but not so inane as if M. Night Shamalayan directed it, to keep the player involved. I am hoping The Witcher 2 keeps up with the fantastic storyline.
Overall, it was a fantastic game. Especially for a company with not so much funding backing it up. It kept to the original RPG style. It isn't sandbox, and it isn't theme park. It has enough things to do if you don't feel like progressing the story yet, and lots and lots of hidden things to find to not only enjoy but to gain a few neat items on the way. The games difficulty can be considered hardcore at times as you get brutally murdered without much of a way to respond, so use Save Game often.
Final Score: 8/10
