1987 I believe it was for me, final fantasy started it for me and the Dragon Warrior sealed the deal with the free game offer via nintendo power scrip. And I played a bunch of Wizardry games as well text RPGs like Zork. And the rest was history!

First "RPG" I ever played was diablo 2 when I was mmm 16 yrs old (2001). I fell in love with character buliding/leveling, loot, exp, etc.
Next RPG I played was FFX (2002) and it's still my favorite RPG to this day.
Before those games I played rainbow six, quake, counterstrike, zelda, mario, mega man, etc.
I basically fell in love with RPGs from the first one I touched.

When Kingdom Hearts came out, i played it cause i was only like 6 and it had Peter Pan and stuff. I didn't get far but i loved it. Then KH2 Came out and i played the shit out of it. After that I love games where you level up and select skills and equipment.

Sadly, I didn't really get into RPG games until I bought my PSOne. I picked up FFVII and that's all she wrote. Growing up, even though I had an NES I played all platformers. But since my days with FFVII I have been an RPG nut.

Final fantasy 1 on the NES. I remember seeing my brother play that game for hours on end (plus listening to Megadeth - Rust in Peace)...damn, talking about that just puts me back in that time period... Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was my first RPG ( i know, it's a true RPG...but for a kid...give me a break ) , but after that, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears....oh, the good old days.

First rpg was Super Mario RPG on the SNES. But I didn't really get into rpgs until GBA, when I fell in love with Golden Sun. My friend saw me playing it and told me that if I liked Golden Sun, I would probably also like Lunar. So I got the GBA version of that, which I loved. I then searched until I found the PS1 version. It just kind of snowballed from there. And my love of the Tales series stems from playing it for the first time via Tales of Symphonia on the Gamecube.

As far as RPG's go, FF7 kicked it off for me. Up until that point I had played mostly racing games, fighting games, and sports games. When I played FF7 it was like a whole new world opened up. Been RPG'ing ever since.

I am kind of a late bloomer on RPGs. I didn't really begin to like them until Jade Empire. I played a few of the FFs and Ultimas, but didn't really get into them.
So I guess when RPGs started to add more action game elements is when I started to love them.

I loved the first FF but that was it for NES. I don't remember playing any RPGs on my next system, Genesis, and then I got into other stuff and didn't game for a long time. When I came back to it in PS2 era, my re-entry into RPGs was Dark Cloud 2... still one of my favorite games ever.

Early 90's for me - the free copy of Dragon Warrior with a new Nintendo Power subscription. That was also my first RPG - still have it

The game that really made me start loving RPGs was Secret of Mana on the SNES. It was all downhill from there.

I played Pokemon Yellow when it was new, because my brother had it. I liked it ok, but didn't really know it was an RPG. I was around 11 or 12. I really didn't get into RPGs until my fiance(now husband) ordered the GBC Dragon Quest III a few years ago. He had it sent to my house for some odd reason I can't recall now, but I started playing it and got interested. This was after I'd said RPGs were lame. My first RPG I beat was the DS remake of FF III and the rest is history!

This generation actually. I know I missed out on a lot before this but could never really get into RPGs before. Mass Effect really kicked it off for me. Now it is probably my favorite genre. Funny how things change.

RPGs just have a relaxation factor that most games dont give me, if that makes any sense

Manny has it. While there are plenty of relaxing points (cool cutscenes, grindy points) there are some awful points.
"What? No save before the boss? But the last save point was nearly 30 minutes straight ago, not including grinding. And I just ground out some levels and got some gear to make sure I was on par with boss. Well, hopefully the mechanics won't be too hard to pick up on and counter. The boss just two shot my party? What the f.... YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

I wouldn't say that I've started to "love" RPGs, but the first ones that got me into the genre were Pokemon Blue and Golden Sun. I remember playing the crap out of those games and never really feeling like I'd gotten anywhere. At some point I ended up only playing rpgs for some reason, though. I can't remember why, but I've gotten out of that phase of my life. I think the only RPGs I have now are Pokemon White, Okamiden(?), and Golden Sun: Dark Dawn - just ds games.

RPGs just have a relaxation factor that most games dont give me, if that makes any sense I get this feeling too. It's just a warm, welcome home, lets play kind of feeling. I was kind of late to RPGs, probably KOTR was the first I remember loving and when they added the "Action" part to the RPG, I really fell in love. I remember HIO on the IGN boards hyping Oblivion for like 12 months prior to launch. He had me convinced it would be the greatest game ever and basically it was. The real time action fighting combined with the massive RPG feel made Oblivion the game I could not put down. 120 hours just flew by in that world. And since then Fallout 3, New Vegas, ME 1&2, it's been a gravy train of awesomeness.

Who else participated in getting a free copy of Dragon Warrior for a Nintendo Power scrip? Right here! That was the game that got me hooked onto RPGs. I remember not getting it a first but I spend time just wandering, killing things and getting experience. I still believe to this day that Dragon Warrior was the game that got me to love grinding games. I can't explain why I love the grind, in fact I remember having some friends over and showing them Dragon Warrior and them just not getting it. To this day I love RPGs that almost require you to grind, even though I don't have as much time for it, I still try to play them to their fullest. I'm always willing to try almost any RPG today. Doesn't matter the type, difficulty, art style, or whatever. If other RPG fans recommend it, I'm game to try.
