I think this is a great topic, both games i found quite amazing. I found Mass Effect one to be the superior RPG as in RPG qualities. But I think Mass Effect 2 while a little less RPGish, was just the better game.
I just loved the atmosphere of 2, i cant quite put my finger on it. I know the RPG factor people loved and missed and i did too, but i was ok with how they did it.
Now if they stripped any more out of the 3rd version for RPG factor, that may suck...but i think its one of the best new game series going overall.

I think Mass Effect 2 was the better game but I liked ME1's story better. I miss some of the more RPGish elements from 1 too. And I actually preferred driving the Mako around the other planets over scanning and probing.
I realize this has not been the best argument for why I liked 2 better than 1.

I think ME had a better story and final boss bottle, but I really dislike Ashley and Kaiden. Also, the inventory system was clunky.
ME2 had much more likeable characters, and the Renegade/Paragon actions were a lot more fun.

I think I played ME through 3 times and ME2 only once, but I think overall ME2 was a better game. Both are awesome in my book.

I can't decide which I prefer. I think they're both amazing, if for somewhat different reasons.

Mass Effect 2 was the better game overall but ME1 will always stand out more for me. I mean I have never played a game where the story immersed me as much as that. I wish I could go and play the game for the first time again. Also as Bing said the Mako was way better then that silly scanning the planet.

ME1 was absolutely fantastic. I'm still playing ME2 and I can see it is probably the better game but I am not that far yet.

While I thought ME2 was the better game, I wish it had advanced the story a bit more.

Mass Effect 1 had plenty of technical issue while Mass effect 2 was polished better.

I do miss the Mako planet exploration in ME. Scanning the planets in ME2 was kind of boring. There weren't that many planets with anomalies.

I really loved both, and I found that Mass Effect 2 had better features, but I still feel that Mass Effect was more revolutionary and had a more epic ending (not that ME2 didn't).

ME2 played and performed better but the story was better in ME1. BUT, I feel ME2 was necessary to build up for part 3 which should be terrific. Overall, I enjoyed ME2 more.
