Though it was far superior IMO, the PS2 Tales of the Abyss really suffered by being released only a couple of weeks prior to the release of FFXII.

I'm really glad that this gives more people an opportunity to play it. ;D

So I have my hands on the Nintendo Power with the Tales of the Abyss info in it.

Here are some key parts of that article.

On the power of the 3DS:

Tales-series producer Makoto Yoshizumi has long wanted to do a handheld remake of Tales of the Abyss. But there was one problem: none of the last generation of portable game systems were capable of a near-perfect port of a PlayStation 2 game. "We knew that if we were going to port it to a new platform, we wanted it to be equal to or even better than the original game, and really bring out its full potential," Yoshizumi explains. "The Nintendo 3DS finally solved all those issues and provided just the opportunity we were looking for." Not only did the platform have the power to bring the game back to life without any significant graphical compromises, but its 3D capabilities offered a way to add an impressive new feature without having to mess too much with the underlying game. From battles to dungeons to event scenes, Yoshizumi's team was able to remaster the entire game into 3D (save for the handful of animated cutscenes) in less than a year.

On load times:

"Rest assured that we were able to cut down on load times significantly, thanks to using the N3DS Game Card in place of optical media."

Unexpected perks:

The move to Nintendo 3DS has brought a few unexpected perks. In addition to offering 3D visuals, the system's upper screen provides a widescreen aspect ratio that makes event scenes and overworld areas feel a bit more cinematic and gives the battles a little more room to breathe.

On the bummer side of things, they don't plan to include any communication features such as co-op, online, StreetPass, or Spotpass.

I missed out on the generation of gaming that was the PS2 GC and Xbox era, so any chance to reply these games is alright in my book.

Yeah, definitely. I know people are already complaining about the amount of ports on the 3DS, but this is definitely one that no one should miss. It's a fantastic, amazing game, and didn't reach nearly as many people as it should have the first time around.

According to Nintendo Power, Tales of the Abyss is the only rpg scheduled to come out this fall, so it will have no competition. Of course, I'm sure more rpgs will be announced, but I think it will still have a much better chance than the original. ^_^

Also, for European Tales fans, it is finally confirmed for release there as well, although not until 2012.

So it looks like the US release date was pushed back a little. It's now listed as coming out January 6 of next year. So far, I have only seen it listed on Amazon and walmart.com

What's the deal with all this remake business?

Is it getting too costly/risky for new IPs to come to the market? Are creative juices running out?

I'd rather get NEW content. I've played tota already and thought it was a fine game. I'm sure the graphics aged well as it didnt release too long ago.

New IPs are what should be driving the gaming industry, not cod24 and final fantasy iv remake of a remake for psp.

Honestly, Namco Bandai is awful about releasing Tales games outside of Japan. So I'm taking what I can get. It doesn't hurt that Tales of the Abyss is my favorite game ever, either. If it does well enough, maybe they'll remake other Japan only Tales games for the 3DS and also give us new versions of Tales as well.

Well, from all the reports I heard about this. It's a bad port. They fixed the loading, but at the expense of making the game look terrible.

The impressions of the game has not been nice.

I know I still think about grabbing a PS2 but my backlog is terrible at this point.
