I personally like dish better than Direct, unless somethings changed it's cheaper and I like the features better. Just personal taste though...

It's been so long since I used Direct that I can't really explain what I didn't like. Seems like everytime I use it though I don't like it.

I went from Direct to Dish only because of a package deal with my phone company. I like the UI of DirectTV better than Dish but Dish is cheaper and has a better package (imo).

I really like the way Dish handles scheduling of shows. I have very limited experience with Direct, though, but from what I experienced Dish seems to handle things more intuitively. Of course, both probably offer upgraded receivers than what I have used and am currently using, so things could have changed.
One thing about Dish is that you get no Disney channels in HD because of some falling out they had. I imagine you can still get them on Direct. Cartoons, specifically the new Avengers cartoon, look so damn good in HD that I am disappointed, but if you never watch the channels then no big deal.

I think it comes down to personal taste. I looked at both services long and hard before making a decision. I ended up with Dish and am very satisfied.

Switched from Direct to Dish and kept Dish for 5 years, then switched to U-Verse.
With free HD for life thing I think Dish has the edge currently unless you want MLB network or a few of the other channels they don't carry.
We just switched in May and we had Disney HD, must have been very recent.

Seth I really like Directv.
I've been with them since 2001 and I almost can't live without the Sunday Ticket.
Losing G4 bugged me, though.

The thing i do like about dish alot is the dvr factor in that you can have 2 shows recording at once, but then watch a recorded show as well.
How does DirectTV handle their dvr stuff, how many shows can record at one time?

You should be able to do the same, so long as you get a dual tuner, as they call it "multi room", receiver. I see no reason why Dish wouldn't offer one. When I used Time Warner Cable its receiver would also let me record two things at once plus watch something I already recorded, the same with Dish. And actually the the Time Warner receiver had one feature better than the current Dish receiver I'm using: You could hook up an external hard drive via eSATA. This allowed you to expand storage and have things stored on the external function exactly like it was on the internal. The interface was pretty seemless. With this current Dish, it only allows a USB connection, which just isn't fast enough to do all of that. So you have to manually manage your videos, and accessing the external drive is not as intuitive - it cuts off your live feed just to browse what things are on the external drive, and the interface is different (more clumsy) than recordings on the internal drive. Also you have to pay a one time fee to Dish to activate the external drive, while it was free to hook up one to the Time Warner receiver.
