I know for myself these days I find that all these action movies and super hero movies while not bad, the wow factor doesnt hit me anymore. And i think its all the CGI that goes on with these movies, like anything is doable now and we all know its done with computers...do you miss the time when it wasnt really computer generated for the most part?
I think thats why past movies were so exciting and better, because they were stages set, huge sets built and characters created out of machines or huge puppets etc...this to me just made a movie come to life. And now we get and see so many action movies where its all computer generated for the most part, and i dont find myself going wooow look at that.
I dont know. I think for me i just feel computers are great but very overused in the movie industry today, but thats just me.

I think this is one of the reasons why Star Wars 4,5&6 trump 1,2&3.
The Tech and green screen is cool, but when they were innovating and tricking the eye it just seemed better.

Well, back before CGI there was always the interest and lingering question floating around for some of the special effects. People would constantly have to ask themselves "How the hell did they do that?!" when now there is an easy answer that is 99% of the time correct...computers and technology. You just can't really get the same feel for movies and, as DantesForum has already said, that is the major reason why the Star Wars OT is far better than the PT. Just compare Yoda from episode 5 to him in episode 2 and 3. Sure it's cool to see him jump around and whatnot but he really does look more believable as a puppet.

Yea, its sort of killing movies a bit for me. What im looking for in movies these days are just good thinker films like Prestige or Doubt, those are just movies that are built around great acting and stories.
I think they need to scale back and make movies using computers to fill in some gaps, not be the WHOLE movie almost in terms of action. Some director needs to get back to basics.

Very interesting point but a valid one.
I miss the old days as well. Things were more exciting then.

With all the CGI now, I feel like the writers/directors don't even try to develop the storyline anymore.
"eh... I know it's a weak story. But, we'll just add a TON of special effects and make millions!!!"
my 2 cents

I miss those days where Movies got delayed cause a Puppet took an actor out. Realism over Computer Generations. I just don't understand why if they actually do CGI why not make it look apart of the movie, and not obvious CGI.

I just think they need to start scaling back a bit on the action, its like we get it...computers can make things explode and look awesome, but its just not grabbing me much anymore.

OK, but honestly, would Transformers look as cool today without computers?
HAHA!
Actually I do agree to an extent. It almost seems as if the creativity has been removed from current day movies because a flick of the wrist and a click of the mouse now dictates how a scene will go. Yeah it looks cool, but what happened to designing an entire city out of plywood only to have it blown to pieces with little cameras picking up all the angles.
It just seems more and more, people are willing to fork over cash to see some amazing CG and the movies that are "real" so to speak tank at the box office week after week.
Compare it to gaming. Take a game where the story is atrocious but it is visually stunning and people flock to it. Make the next final fantasy 8-bit and it will only appeal to the "hardcore gamers" and probably not sell well. Originality has gone by the wayside this day and age so that directors can appeal to the mass crowds. Yes, that is where the money is, but it started years ago when the CG effects found their way into movies.
Yet, watch the Oscars and the movies no one has seen are the ones up for awards, the ones that don't typically flood our brains with amazing explosions, dynamic computer generated cinematography, and escalated levels of fake looking violence. Maybe I am off on my thinking but I find I enjoy watching old school movies better than alot of the new garbage making it to the big screen these days.
CG is awesome to a point, but scaling back will only create empty seats by today's standards. I guess a good example would be something like Titanic. Think of it what you will but there was not much in the way of computer animation. It was a great story that really put an amazing spin on two people and the impacts their relationship had on the people surrounding them. No not every movie needs to be Titanic, but movies that follow story more than graphics tend to tank "titanically" at the box office.

With all the CGI now, I feel like the writers/directors don't even try to develop the storyline anymore. "eh... I know it's a weak story. But, we'll just add a TON of special effects and make millions!!!" my 2 cents Micheal Bay's Transformers is the perfect example of this. I miss those days where Movies got delayed cause a Puppet took an actor out. Realism over Computer Generations. I just don't understand why if they actually do CGI why not make it look apart of the movie, and not obvious CGI. I agree about not making it completely obvious but there are some things that should be CGI otherwise they simply wouldn't be possible in a movie - or not easily. In the LOTR Trilogy there are those giant elephant things - I'm not too sure what they're called - that look awesome even though they are CGI. When I first saw them I was amazed, my jaw dropped and everything. That's actually the example I use to tell people what I'm going to college for. And then there's films like the Transformers where no movie directors had even attempted to make a live-action film with it until advanced CGI. I guess I'm sort of two-sided on this. On the one hand I enjoy older movies where there is little to no CGI but on the other hand I do like the new movies that can make movies fun and show how advanced our technology is becoming.
