Just saw this movie tonight. I'm not going to say anything about the story for spoilers, but I will say that the movie is solid. I didn't enjoy it as much as Fast Five or Hangover 2, but along the lines of Thor (in terms of fun). J J shot the movie very well; giving that 80's retro look to the film was pretty awesome...and oh yeah, someone in the movie is rocking that walkman!
Overall, I give it a 7/10. Now, the movie is good, but I rate movies a little tough based on like...if i would buy the movie, is it re-watchable, did it blow my mind...etc. The reason for a 7 is because the movie is good, the actors / kids do a great job, it's funny at times, but after the movie was over, i felt a little dissatisfied to which I thought there should have been more. as I left the theater, i realized that i wouldn't mind seeing it again, but i wouldn't buy this on bluray once it comes out. some of you will probably just love this movie; that's fine...but i walked in with little expectations and walked out saying that it was a good, solid movie. Did J J out-do his Star Trek movie? Not a chance. Star Trek (in my mind) is a strong 9, if not 10 out of 10 in my mind. I can watch Star Trek at any time and just have a blast. With Super 8, I don't have that same feeling.
Overall Score: 7 / 10.

Got to agree with everything you said adam. The only thing I'm gonna add to this thread is...
If you are looking for a well thought out, STORY DRIVEN movie, that is a different kind of big summer flick, then this is for you.
If you are looking for a ACTION movie, you will walk away disappointed...

I think we need more movies story driven these days, i think the action stuff is just now losing its wow factor.

Cool, thanks for the impressions guys. I hardly ever go to the theater anymore, but this is the one movie this summer that my wife and I both want to see.

I just saw the film today. Overall, I liked it. The first half definitely had the feel and elements of a 70's/early 80's Spielberg film. There's the innocent kids, the suburban neighborhood, glimpses of a threat, that's never fully seen till the third act etc. It was solid. Don't think I would want to see it again right away, but still a good film.

I despise action summer movies with no substance. Super 8 gave me everything they didn't; superb action, real suspense, brilliant acting, a small bit of wow-factor; but most of all, it actually taps into your emotions, a thing I haven't been able to say about most movies I've seen recently.
Never been a fan of the Spielberg-type of movie, and as much as I'd heard that this is the quintessential non-Spielberg Spielberg movie, I didn't really feel at all like I was watching a spielberg movie, I felt like Abrams really did what he did best; make action, but only so much as it fits the characters, theme, and allows for actual feeling about whats going on from the audience side of things.
There were problems, but all of them secondary to me, overall a great movie, I'd say pretty confidently that this is the best I'll see this summer as far as I think.
