Purple; are you referring to the Gameboy Color? Try the original Monochrome Gameboy, now that thing is a brick! I still have mine stored away in the attic, I should dig it out sometime.
$1 for a fit of nostalgia is a great price though, I remember the first color game I had was this platformer called Rats! where you played as a mobster rat. It was just as terrible as it sounds.

Good times. I love my GB, GB Pocket, and 2 GBCs. Super Mario Land and Link's Awakening FTW!

This makes me think of what me and my sister are currently doing. We're scouting the internet for a couple of game boy colors just to bring back memories. It's actually becoming a pain to find one that works, is the right color - that's right, a solid lime one and one of the transparent purple ones - and is a reasonable price. So...yeah, already picked up a couple of the gameboy color games we used to have - dinosaur, atlantis, chicken run, pokemon red & blue - so now we just need game stations to play them on. Good times..

My first Gameboy was a Gameboy Color. Still pretty big, though. But it was the silver/gold one that came out with Pokemon Gold and Silver. I do have two of the old school brick Gameboys, though. They came into my GameStop when I was still working there. We couldn't take them as trade-ins, but the customer left them with us anyway and my boss let me have them just to get rid of them.
