Hey guys, I always hear people talking about Steam and how they can get great deals and such...Well, I have the itch to play Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic again...For some reason the disc won't load up on my new Xbox Slim...It worked(albiet with some lag issues) on my original 360...Now, I noticed its only $9.99 on Steam...Paying the $9.99 would be cheaper than hunting down an original Xbox. My question is how does Steam officially work? Do I pay for the game and just download the game? Or Do you have to download some kind of program and then download the game? Can you play the game even if your not connected to the internet(I wanna bring my laptop into work and play some LOL )

store.steampowered.com/Go there, download the interface. Steam is the equivalence to Xbox LIVE or PSN and etc. it has the achievements and whatnot and you boot up all the games you pay for through it. (And you can even link non steam games onto it for the label to tell your friends what you're playing as well. However, that doesn't have the full mechanics like some other steam supported games do. Meaning you may not get some achievements on your steam ID and such.) You CAN play the games without having steam on, but I doubt you can play them online. And it's as you said, pay for the game, you download and install it and then you can play it.

Awesome! Appreciate the info!
I got another question now tho...Will a game like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic be hard/annoying to play with a keyboard and mouse?...I have never really played anything big on a PC before.

If you've only really ever played games on a console with a controller, it'll take some, or even a lot of getting used to.

I remeber reading somewhere that you can use you 360 controller on the PC...Now does it work with the games on Steam?
Another thing, I only have a wireless controller but have that wire you plug into the 360 to charge the controller...Will that work out?

i think you need a special dongle for it or whatever...
My advice is, get going on Steam, it's really the best games platform available nowadays, has the best sales/deals, and get yourself a wired 360 controller for PC...
gaming bliss right there! biggest library ever!

I doubt you do, but you may want to be careful if you're running any odd OSes (Example: XP64.) when using drivers for controllers. Chances are, it'll get pretty wonky and problematic pretty fast.
However, I'm pretty sure you're probably running windows 7 or xp32, so it shouldn't be a big deal.

I know that for the Magic game you gotta go find the game shortcut and tell it to run it as administrator. I had that same problem. Probably won't hurt to try it for the Magicka game too.

Steam has to be running in order to launch the games, however you only have to be online when playing multiplayer Valve or Steamworks games. Steam has an offline mode where you launch the games.
KOTOR plays pretty well with a keyboard and mouse. I played the game when I first started getting into PC gaming and had no problems at all.
You can't use the wireless Xbox controller by connecting it with the recharge cable. You have to buy the wireless adapter to use a wireless controller on PC.
