Im an IT guy for a major hospital organization. I also do computer work on the side and I am looking to work on a potential fitness business. If I could just get the home computer work and fitness businesses off the ground I could avoid "working for the man" someday!
What about you? What funds your gaming?

Bing - Netsec eh? I've always had an interest in network security work. How do you like it?

Phoenix - Nothing wrong with that. A job is a job. Bing - Netsec eh? I've always had an interest in network security work. How do you like it? It's ok. As you can imagine it can get kind of boring. But when you get to do the investigative parts of the job it can be fun. Setting up a port sniffer on a network to try and figure out why data is being lost is pretty fun. But a lot of it is more along the lines of following up on automated alerts for system breaches and finding out that someone fat fingered a password 4 times.

Bing, what would a person do to get into that field. Is it a must to go and get schooling on it?

I have a B.S. in I.T. and a M.B.A. I got a job doing desktop (troubleshooting PC and network issues). They needed a security guy, so I started helping out. Eventually they made me a security guy. I would say you need at least a B.S. in Information Technology or Information Sciences. From there, maybe work on a CompTIA Security+ certification. I think they are pretty easy to get. The ultimate security cert though is the CISSP. I am still just working on getting enough work experience to be able to get the cert.

I think I could definitely get into Netsec. I have been in computer support with some background in LAN support and Datacomm over the past 10+ years. I have been looking within the organization for openings in other areas of IT. This is one I'd like to possibly pursue. I do have a 2 year degree + an additional over 10 years experience. I think that counts for something without having a BS or higher degree.

I publish a small antiques publication that's a subsidiary of my Dad's newspaper. He has aspirations of me one day taking it.
Within that I: Manage both my dad's website and my own, write for both the newspaper and my publication, and sell ad space for my publication.
I stay pretty busy.
