Just as many of you's week will be starting, I'll have a nice couple days off! Just finished my 5th 12 hour shift in 6 days.
As some of you know, I'm a nurse, and this past week I had my first patient pass away. I work orthopedics, generally, so we don't see much of that. I'd gotten close to her and her family and even though I knew she wasn't going to leave alive and she accepted it and made her peace with it, I was still really sad when it happened Friday morning. Sometimes you just can't help but get attached to your patients, especially when they're as sweet as she was.
Anyway, just felt I needed to get that off my chest. Like I said, I've been sad, but I also feel good that I was able to take such good care of her and make her comfortable like that. She was also a nurse at my hospital and retired in 2005 at the age of 79. So in a way, she was in her second home when she died. Her family was also wonderful and was highly appreciative of me. The sister and daughters hugged me when it was all over and they all expressed a lot of gratitude.
Just thought I'd give you a bit of insight into my career. I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything. It makes me feel so human most days.

Awesome! My uncle is an RN, so I have lots of respect for them and what they do. Very sorry to hear about your patient passing, but the way her family responded to you after it was over is a testament to your dedication and love for the job. Keep up the good work!
