So, I know a lot of people (myself included) were still a little unclear as to the relationship between these 2 games. This video should clear up at least some of those questions. www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-2011-dust-514/715865Very cool concept, and I will definitely check it out next year.

Super pumped for this game.
I know Dust 514 has been in development for a while.
If they can pull the concept off, this game will be amazing.
Either way, it's a day one purchase for me.

I tried Eve Online once a few years ago, but the infamous learning curve kind of put me off and I never subbed after the trial was over. I wonder if they've made it any easier for noobs to get started with it? I'm not just talking about the game mechanics itself, but I was also very put off by the lack of recruiting by corporations.
Still, I will check out Dust 514 whether I'm an Eve subber or not.

It's still very much an MMO, but it's a lot different from, say, WoW. Here is a FAQ pulled off their website for those who might be interested: www.eveonline.com/faq/faq_01.aspI'm tempted to start up another free trial...

EVE is a little rough at times, it's learning curve is what puts people off to it or the lack of the ability to grind.
If you're looking to get into EVE, I've been in it for a while and can answer some questions.

EVE is really quite difficult to describe in a short post, so I'll start small and as the thread goes on, I'll expand as questions come up.
EVE is not your "typical" MMO, you sort of have to lose the Aion, Everquest, Rift, WoW mentality before you even do the install. It's the fact that you cannot "grind" that really struck me in the beginning (and it was the reason I stopped playing for a while initially). From our experience in Aion, you and I and some buddies could go into a dungeon, power game and within a day if we wanted a certain peice of armor or a certain weapon or a particular level - we just got it. In EVE the entire game is skill based and skills are ONLY raised by training, and that training is in real time. I'll use an example here that's pretty easy to visualize.
You want to fly a particular spaceship you start with your racial "Frigate" skill. I think at base you get (Caldari, Minmatar, Gallente, Amarr) Frigate 3. To train that skill to 4 is maybe 20 hours (which makes you better with that races Frigates, to get into the best Frigates you need that racial Frigate to 5. And that training is about 9 days. So that's just to pilot the ship, to use particular guns, lasers, or "fittings" in general, it's more training time. So while that's a hindrance for some of us power gamers, it works out for people with time constraints. Or people who just don't like to grind.
(Yes, the above probably turned off half the crowd to EVE. I'm completely aware of that, and it's one of the things that sort of keeps EVE with a different crowd. A crowd I've really begun to enjoy, for a complete change of pace.)
It's hard to talk about starting off as a new player, since actually the latest expansion just launched a few hours ago. Players are now finally about to get out of their ship and...go to the captain's quarters. CCP tends to release expansions gradually, so in another month maybe - we'll be able to walk around in stations and finally see our corp mates.
I think the easiest way to explain it - it's sort of like Ultima rules, with spaceships. That's just the lens I use to look through it, it's different for everyone. I could go on and on, but not knowing who wants to know what...it's hard.
EVE is really Community and Economy. And all of the games mechanics sort of build off that. if you're going to "raid' in EVE - it's something you'll do with 20-100(100's) of people. Whether it's taking sovereignty from some other Alliance or taking a station in null sec or just ganging up to do a fleet roam, looking for members of Red/KOS alliances to shoot when they come to your space (or vice versa).
Yes, for all of the TLDR'ers out there - what do you want to know? Otherwise, I'm a little prone to ramble sometimes. Just ask Setharion, he'll tell you.

I am a 2006 player for EVE. EVE is still a very hard game to explain to players as it is really unlike anything out there. The game is not for everyone The good thing about the game beyond it's fun PVP (well if you aren't in huge 0.0 cap fleet fights) is that the player base is extremely devoted to the game. Part of this is because the power gamer is only better off then the casual player in how much money they make. Everyone can train at the same rate as anyone else. This takes time and is a major turn off to the wow "I gotta have it now" kiddies. Tons of outside the game stuff has been made for the good of everyone. for example even I have made a little industry calculator for the game evevault.ign.com/View.php?view=PlayerArt.Detail&id=74The player base though is also all about stabbing you in the back. Either through scamming you to pay too much for an item, or taking all your corp's assets if you give them access. It's just the meta game of EVE. one of the greatest things about the game is that you can (with enough time) do everything that anyone else can do. You are not limited to a specific role or even a specific race. I can fly pretty much every t1 battleship, t1/t2 cruiser, t1 and t2 frigate in the game (except for t2 caldari frigates - never cared for them) of course It's not something you can just do quickly. I can't fly t2 battleships, and the only capital ship I can fly is a revelation but I can get into carriers fairly quickly if I wanted to waste isk
