The Dreamstation 64 era. Witout it gaming would still be 16 bit. I would say this generation has been the most impressive/best just because of what we can do with online etc. Also, the games you can list this gen are trully amazing. The Dreamstaion 64 era would follow 2nd, then I would go to the 16 bit era. I initially started gaming at age 4-5 when the original Nintendo was released but really started to love games in the 16 bit era.

16 Bit (SNES & Genesis). Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Herzog Zwei, Sonic, Final Fantasy IV and VI, Donkey Kong Country, Earthworm Jim, Super Metroid, Link to the Past, NFL '94 (Sega Sports), Super Mario World, Mortal Kombat 2, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Mario Kart, F-Zero...ah man.

In reality though...are those games better than games this gen? Obviously nostalgia plays a big rule in determining this question but games IMO overall keep getting better and better for the most part. That was a great era.

The generation in which I have the fondest memories is the 16-bit generation because I was a kid and had lots of free time for gaming as did my friends. If given the choice to be stranded on a desert island with one generation of games available to me, though, I would choose this generation. Gaming just keeps getting better. For instance, Streets of Rage 2 will forever be my most beloved side-scrolling beat-em-up game because of it's place in my youth, but Castle Crashers is a superior evolution of that genre. I used to love playing Pole Position on my Atari, too, and it will always have a special play in my heart, but I'd much rather play Burnout Paradise these days. Shining Force 2 was the best RPG ever in my mind, but... no wait... it still is... Actually as I'm typing this, I'm getting really nostalgic. Revenge of Shinobi. Golden Axe. Herzog Zwei. Landstalker. Sonic of yore... hmm... maybe the 16-bit generation WAS the bestest generation... Gah!

Someday we will be playing those games online. Of course we have to go through the emulator route. But i still play Sunset Riders online co-op with a buddy of mine through an emulator that supports networking.

Hard to say what specific generation was the best, but in terms of time frame I'd have to say 1998-2004 had a very good run with decent amounts of improvements and innovation and decent games (Timesplitters, Half life etc come to mind).
