I think based on a mix of things, last generation may of been my favorite in terms of great RPGs and pretty awesome looking games too boot. Perhaps with the 16 bit era behind it.
This generation is nothing to turn your nose up too tho, it's been amazing. But on the nostalgic side the 8 bit era is my fav , but I'm talking moreso on technical merit and game selection.

This if you consider current gen with the portables like the DS, which is really just the 16 bit era continued. If you don't consider that, then I would stick with the 16 bit era. Sega Genesis and SNES were just unstoppable.

The 16-bit era by far. SNES and Genesis are my two of my favorite systems.

SNES was my favorite system, though the first Playstation still holds a spot in my heart with games like Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, Xenogears, DQ7, and of course FF 7 and 9.

It is this generation for me easily. Between the co op goodness and my newfound love of RPGs I am having a blast.

Yeah, the thing with this generation is that you can enjoy the innovation of awesome online and coop gaming with new cutting edge graphics, but also have the ability to play older type of games via the ds and psp, which are new games but also retain the essence of greatness from their big brothers in the 16 bit era.

For me, it had to be the PS2 era, my full collection of these games prove this to me. Thats the thing with me too DC, like my main collection of 360,ps3 and wii titles is large but last gen my collection of PS2, GC and Xbox titles...wow i need serious space to keep those games out and about, just a massive collection. But this gen is definitly amazing as well.

16 bit generation. It just had some of the best RPGs and platformers ever. DC and this generation are in close second though.

I love PS1 and how it took home gaming to another level. There weren't genres like survival horror in games till the original playstation released Resident Evil. However, I'm very nostalgic for 16 bit and SNES. Games like Contra: Alien Wars and Star Fox were just awesome.

For me it has to be this current generation. It has provided the biggest leap in terms of everything imo.

For me it has to be this current generation. It has provided the biggest leap in terms of everything imo. I can see it man, this gen really has made huge leaps and bounds. Even just using the Nintendo front, the level designs for SMG are unreal. But even aside from Nintendo, games like ME1 and 2, GoW3 etc are amazing. This gen is definitly amazing.

RPG's would have been the SNES for me.
This generation is the best in terms of games overall.

I pretty much feel bummed about the primary retail space in this current generation. It just seems to mainstream oriented, more so than prior generations. Games really start feeling like they are being designed by the marketing team as much as the development team. I guess it's great if you're into the games in the style that's popular at the moment... but it's been really frustrating for me.
The greatest saving grace this generation are the smaller developers and the advent of the downloadable scene. IMO the increased emphasis on downloadable titles is the greatest thing to happen this generation. Not HD graphics, not motion controls.
It's really allowed for a bunch of smaller, more concisely designed games to come out. It's allowed genres long thought to be dead to suddenly find new root (point n' click adventure games, 2D platformers). It's even allowed for a few mega hits to arrive on the scene (Minecraft).
Of course the other greatest thing this generation is the DS, but that's a whole other thing.
As for my favorite generation I'm undecided at the moment. The 16-bit generation was great and has really shown 2D gaming hitting full maturity. The previous generation saw a great jump for the at first rough 3D era to really expand on its development and create many great hits, while still managing to somehow have less of an emphasis on budgets and sequels compared to today so that tons of great sleepers were being delivered (Super Monkey Ball, Okami, Viewtiful Joe, Persona 3, Panzer Dragoon Saga, etc.). This generation was IMO boring on the mainstream front but has been awesome for the smaller guys.

Funny thing is Seth i believe I agree with you. There was just something about last generation that was more striking than the previous one.
Although, for purposes of full disclosure the PS2/xbox/Game Cube generation was my first foray back into gaming.

There's really no clear winner for me.
I love graphics and games like Uncharted and Valkyria Chronicles make me swoon.
But my favorite games of all time are on the PS2 such as FFX and Kingdom Hearts. Tales of Symphonia was another favorite of mine that was on GCN.
But I did grow up on Super Mario Bros on NES, then Street Fighter on SNES.
N64 holds a lot of love from me too. I remember having a couple buds over and playing Goldeneye all the time. Mario 64 is probably the game I had the most fun with in my life. I think it was just the fact moving around in a 3D world was pretty new to me at the time.
I missed out on PS1 games though till I got a ps2. Only played through FF7-9 and Legend of Dragoon.

I think nostalgia is a huge part, but moreso than nostalgia for earlier gens was more of a simpler gaming era that made some of those games stand out. Id give anything to go back to being 7 or 8 with my NES, and the 8bit era was and still is memorable for me, and so is the 16bit era. But i think what made those eras so amazing was that gaming wasnt as huge back then.
We never got games back then like we get now, they came out but at a slower pace. And not every game was a blockbuster hit therefore it made those rpgs or those special action titles standout more in our minds.
Least thats what i think. When you look at the technical merit of the last 2 generations, its pretty amazing.

I think if I take the rose tints away it's either this one or previous.
With the rose tints: Playstation gen.
